Christmas Sewing & Gifting

This Christmas saw me making my first unselfish sewing project! I chose Burda 7359; a shirt for my man. It was my first, not because I’m selfish (lol) but because I wasn’t confident enough with my sewing skills to make something for someone I love.

But after many gentle & sincere pleas from my beloved for a shirt made just for him, I couldn’t resist any longer and decided to surprise him with one for Christmas :) I selected the pattern because of the dressy casual style, which he favours, and the fabric because of the colours and the fact he loves plaid. I used a contrasting dark blue thread and buttons to enhance the light blue in the pattern and to show the topstitching more clearly.

(hehe… Christmas morning; he’s not fully awake yet!)

Dontcha love it with the clashing plaid pj’s? lol

I have to say… this was the most challenging and time consuming project I’ve done yet: aside from the Bombshell dress, that is! ^_^ Cuff plackets, in particular, were a pretty big learning curve for me!

FYI, that’s a fabric quirk there on the sleeve placket – that looks like a stray white thread… this fabric has character! lol

I will make this again for my man but probably not in plaid because it’s just too tough to get all the seams pattern matched. There’s a yoke, two piece collar, front and cuff plackets, etc, and flat felled seams on everything. That being said, I like the way it looks on him – you don’t notice the non-matched areas, and it does match better than a LOT of his RTW garments! ;)

He wore it all day Christmas day and it wound up here:

… which is where all his favourites wind up lol. I take that as a good sign :P

  1. So awesome that you sew for your man! I certainly have not made it to that point yet, but I hope to someday get there (he’s got a few collared shirts that I would love to throw away – so having a handmade replacement would be perfect.

Matching up all of that plaid would be so time consuming. You did a great job with it all.

    • Aw thank you so much Annabelle ^_^ I spose it’s not too bad for my first try, eh? ^_^ I’m sure your hubby would love something special & handmade just for him by you, and that you’ll do an amazing job! :)

  2. What a fabulous gift! You did an epic job with the plaid matching, Symon. Awesomeness! Hope you had a wonderful festive season :D

  3. misscrayolacreepy

I’m impressed!!! I am afraid to make Luke a shirt, it’s scary!

  4. OH wow that’s fab – and you did choose plaid for your first one too. Mad scared I am of plaid anything let alone a bloke’s shirt. Nice one Symon

  5. I just told myself to “step away from the sewing machine’ after day of merrily trying to add a collar stand to a Negroni shirt for my dear husband. All I can say is that I wasted a lot of time and some nice fabric that he liked…sigh… Your success is encouraging….(but I think I need to get out of the house for now!)

    • Oh my goodness, yes, I feel your pain!! Twice during construction of this thing, I sewed, serged, AND topstitched two seams that turned out to be wrong….. let me just say, me & the seam ripper spent as much time together as me & the sewing machine!! lol

  6. so awesome! well done! those cuffs look pretty good too! I hope mine turn out just a smidgen like that! for the first muslin shirt I made i opted for short sleeves! haha! my guy still hasnt got this part of his xmas present. :P

  7. Great shirt! Lucky man. I can totally appreciate the work gone into this, having done a couple myself but that sleeve placket is a great addition. Brave move with the checks for a first shirt…. hats off to you! :-)

  8. It looks great – he should be very pleased with it! With the plaid, doing a bias cut yoke helps avoid some of the matching.
I have never sewed for my hubby, I know he just wouldn’t appreciate it :)

    • That’s a good idea, Lizzie – I’ve seen it done and it looks good; I just didn’t have the foresight to actually think of it when cutting my pieces lol

I’m surprised you think your husband wouldn’t appreciate you making something for him… you have mad skills!! ^_^

  9. Oh, found your Burda shirt make! It’s really nice looking! Very well, done with the button up cuffs and collar. I have yet to make a shirt like this. it’s next on the list after the pants.
